Ode to the Fuckboy

Ode to the Fuckboy

Fuckboy
A term used too often in anger to describe a love interest that is no longer
A term I have used recently and repeatedly
As this word makes its way through my teeth, I’d like to explain what I think it to mean
You are not a fuckboy because you didn’t fall in love with me
We are not meant to fall in love with every person we meet
If that were the case, there’d be chaos in the streets and our newsfeeds would be deprived of those hilarious, all-too-relatable, dating memes
You are not a fuckboy because you are someone I slept with and now parts of me wish I didn’t
I laid beside you because it felt nice
At times it even felt right
Until eventually you began to treat me like a skin bag full of bones and meat
A transition I was not blind to seeing
You are not a fuckboy because you’re not ready to invest
I look back on our time spent without anger or regret
In our memories, I learned understanding and respect
For you, I only wish the best
You are not a fuckboy because I caught feelings for you
With a heart like mine, it was something I was bound to do
You are not a fuckboy because you became someone I care about
You are not a fuckboy because you cracked me open like an egg and all my forgotten baggage came falling out
I should actually thank you for catalyzing some much needed growth
You’re a fuckboy because you pretended to be someone you’re not
You’re a fuckboy because you lied about what you wanted
I told you I wasn’t ready for anything serious
I just wanted to get to know you a bit
I had one condition, be honest
That was it
Too much for you to handle I guess
You’re a fuckboy because you don’t see the double edged sword forged by your dishonesty
You’re a fuckboy because of your lack of empathy
You’re a fuckboy because of how greedily and carelessly you handle another’s heart
How ignorantly you play your part
The problem is, I knew from the start, but I won’t stop myself from loving hard
I will always be soft and forgiving
It’s the only way I want to keep living
